Iowans in WWII
September 7, 2007

In the spirit of Ken Burns' PBS documentary "The War," Assignment Iowa is looking back at some of our most compelling stories of World War II - tales of Iowa men and women who helped preserve our liberties. At a time when this generation is passing on at such a rapid rate, we thought it essential to sing their praises one more time. Be advised that the stories were told to us up to 15 years ago. Many of these heroes may no longer be with us.

Part 1 (Program #115)

The show begins with the sixty-five-year-old memories of B-17 bomber crews. Then we meet some unsung heroes of World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen who overcame not only the expected obstacles of war, but also the indignities of prejudice. And finally, the story of a small group of Quakers who helped keep European refugees out of Hitler's reach, right here in Iowa.

Part 2 (Program #116)

We begin with the story of a select group of World War II veterans who, in July of 2002, gathered in Cedar Rapids to celebrate an airplane that symbolizes their priceless contribution to our liberty. Next we turn to the compelling story of the Barnett brothers. 60 years after fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima, they returned to the tiny island with their own loyal brigade of family and friends. Then, the story of a gathering back in 2000 that saluted members of the Women's Army Corps, whose military strengths helped win a war.
