For the first time in 42 years, the state’s Democrats control the governorship and both houses of the Iowa Legislature. The 1965 session was both ambitious and eclectic, as lawmakers passed a civil rights act, created the state’s community college system, and abolished the death penalty. What will be the lasting impact of the current session? With a host of business and economic development issues waiting in the wings, will the Democratic majority increase the minimum wage, give small businesses property tax relief, and allow them to form health insurance pools? And with alternative energy on the front burner, what will the legislature do to encourage the state’s growing industry? On our next Assignment Iowa, we’ll examine those topics and many others as we preview the upcoming legislative session.
