Barges transport coal and grain down the Mississippi River in 2004. The Alter Company, organized by Frank R. Alter in Davenport in 1916, is still operating. The company has terminals in New Orleans, St. Paul, La Crosse, and at its main base in Davenport, Iowa. 2004.
