Basic Function and Responsibility:

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for monitoring general accounting practices, budgeting, developing internal accounting controls, tracking trends and building the Foundation. The successful candidate for this position will report directly to our President and play an instrumental role in the financial future of the Iowa Public Television Foundation.

Desirable Qualifications:

Accounting Degree, Nonprofit knowledge, Reporting Skills, Attention to Detail, Deadline-Oriented, Reporting Research Results, FAFSA experience, Confidentiality, Time Management, Data Entry Management, General Math Skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Quikbooks.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
    • Maintain permanent files such as fixed assets, taxes, etc.
  • Conduct personnel tasks
    • Manage payroll processes through third party vendor (currently Kabel)
      • Process timesheets and payroll
      • Process taxes for each payroll and file quarterly and year end returns and forms
      • Maintain FLEX program
    • Maintain personnel files including vacation, sick leave, and other pertinent data
    • Review and administer Pension plan
      • Ensure new employees are informed and enrolled
      • Execute all necessary reporting and information meetings
    • Coordinate health and life insurance coverage contract
  • Document financial transactions by entering account information.
    • Maintain and reconcile all bank accounts
    • Reconcile membership system revenue with cash deposited
    • Create enter and process all journal entries
    • Process monthly financial statements including review and analysis of expense and revenue accounts
  • Conduct endowment fund transactions
    • Maintain relationships with custodian and fund manager
    • Arrange direct reporting to the board at least annually
  • Recommends financial actions by analyzing accounting information
    • Create and maintain standard results reports for individual revenue generating efforts such as direct mail, telemarketing, corporate support, etc.
    • Analyse membership data and report on trends and observations
    • Recommend and track test segments of our membership to maximize revenue
    • Assist all managers and project teams in financial analysis of their areas.
    • Work with managers to develop annual strategic plan, budget and make projections based on past results.
  • Summarizes current financial status
    • Prepare and distribute monthly statistical package
    • Prepare and distribute monthly financial package of statements and comparative reports, October through June.
    • Complete PBS reports
    • Complete any special reports such as “TAG”, CDP or particular requests
  • Prepares payments by verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements.
    • Process manual and computer checks
  • Staff the Finance committee of the Board of Directors
    • Schedule meetings
    • Report ongoing financial results
    • Report endowment fund performance
  • Document and prepare all materials necessary for annual audit
    • Schedule pre fiscal year end work and full audit to meet needs of the network and the Foundation Board of Directors.
    • Prepare all work papers in a timely manner
    • Be aware of successful audit requirements and maintain documentation throughout the year.
    • Coordinate audit presentation to the board
  • Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Secures financial information by ensuring all data backups.
  • Maintains financial security by analyzing and following internal controls.
  • Answers accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Assist in staff responsibilities during Festival, State Fair and other events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
