Whether it is for a personal or career-oriented reason, Iowa Western Community College's Adult Literacy program can help. Iowa Western serves a seven county area which includes the cities of Council Bluffs, Atlantic, Harlan, Missouri Valley, Shenandoah and Clarinda. Available services include GED preparation and testing, online GED instruction, basic skills instruction, college transition classes and English language instruction for students with limited English language proficiency. You can call 712-325-3266 or 1-800-432-5852, ext. 3266 or check the website for class schedules and frequently asked questions. A $25.00 registration fee is due at the time of registration.
General Educational Development (GED): If attending classes in Council Bluffs, call to make an appointment to get started. If attending at one of the other locations, stop by at the beginning of the scheduled class to allow time for registration and assessment. The G.E.D. test battery consists of (5) separate tests --Language Arts, Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. Contact the Adult Learning Center in Council Bluffs for details regarding GED online instruction and college transitions classes. A test fee of $100.00 is due when you take the first GED test. This fee covers all five tests and your GED diploma.
English as a Second Language: Instruction is available for adults who are learning to speak, read and write English. Contact the nearest IWCC Center for information regarding classes or individualized instruction.
While preparing for the GED test, consider taking advantage of scheduled Math classes, visiting with an IWCC Academic Advisor or soon-to-begin Basic Computer Literacy classes.
