IHCC offers classes for adults who are interested in basic skill improvement which includes job-related and life coping skills, reading, writing, math and English. Students may register on their first day of class and study at an individualized pace with qualified instructors. The Comprehensive Adult student Assessment System (CASAS) is given to all students when they enroll in classes. Students may earn CASAS certificates which document the learning process for adult students functioning academically below the General Education Development (GED) level.
Community English classes are designed to help adults, who are limited in English proficiency achieve competence in the English language. Oral communication for life situations is the foremost goal followed by grammar, writing, reading, and listening. IHCC offers daytime and evening Community English classes in Ottumwa and Fairfield.
Citizenship classes are available weekly in Ottumwa. Computer Literacy classes are taught by bi-lingual instructors and are offered weekly in Ottumwa.
General Education Development
Students who enroll in the GED program will prepare to take the following tests: literature, writing, math, science, and social studies. Upon successful completion of the GED test, adults are eligible to receive the Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the Iowa Department of Education. GED classes are located at various sites within the counties Indian Hills serves. Educational resources, books and study guides are available for students to use in the classroom. A testing, diploma, and processing fee is required for the battery of five tests. GED online testing is now available in Ottumwa. A student has two years to successfully complete the full battery of tests or a reactivation fee is assessed. A student must meet certain requirements if he/she is less than 18 years of age.
I-Pathway GED Online Classes
I-Pathway online classes are a teacher supported on-line instructional tool. Students have a teacher just like in a regular classroom and the teacher provides support and instruction online every step of the way. The student works through lessons and tests at their own pace. The I-Pathway program provides instant scoring of most student lessons. The instructor will grade assignments, give instructions and provide feedback to the student. Students who enroll in this program can move through the GED very quickly.
Education to Career (ETC)
