Adult Learning Center Spotlight: Iowa Valley Community College

In our commitment to lifelong learning, Iowa Public Television highlights adult learning centers across Iowa.This month the spotlight is on Iowa Valley Community College (IVCC).

Iowa Valley Continuing Education (IVCE) is located on the main campus in Marshalltown with other campuses located in Iowa Falls and Grinnell.  Classes are also held in Eldora and Tama/Toledo. Iowa Valley's Education & Training Center (IVETC) brings the services of Iowa Valley Continuing Education right to the center of Marshalltown in an easily accessible location for everyone. 

General Education Development (GED)
Students may register on their first day of class and study at an individualized pace with qualified instructors.  The GED is offered in both Spanish and English.  Classes and pre-tests are tuition free.  The Center charges a $10 administration fee per semester.  Students study to pass the five subtests of the GED Test:  Literature, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  GED official testing is completed at the main campus on Tuesdays at a cost of $100 which includes all five tests and the GED diploma. NEW as of January 15th individuals qualifying for online instruction can work towards their diploma using GED-i.  This system provides students who cannot attend traditional classes resources to study for the GED anytime, from any place with a computer while receiving teacher support.  Check out www.ged-i.org for more information.  Each GED graduate will receive the New Opportunities Scholarship to be used for enrollment for six credits or more per semester.  The $800 scholarship is divided between two semesters.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Students can improve English skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Free Child Care is available.  A computer lab offers participants opportunities to use software such as Rosetta Stone.

Family Literacy
The program serves the entire family by providing childhood education, adult education, parenting classes, and parent-child learning time.  Free child care for students enrolled in daytime and evening ESL/GED classes is available across the street from the Education & Training Center at St. Paul's Episcopal Church; 75c per day snack fee is waived for people in the family literacy program.

Industrial Training Room
Computers for interactive/modular testing in Electricity and Electronic training, Residential Plumbing, Residential Wiring, and Welding are available.
