In continuing its commitment to lifelong learning, Iowa Public Television is proud to highlight the features and offerings of adult learning centers from around Iowa. This month the featured adult learning center is Indian Hills Community College (IHCC).
Indian Hills Community College provides services in the following counties: Monroe, Mahaska, Keokuk, Wapello, Jefferson, Lucas, Davis, Van Buren, and Appanoose. For more information about IHCC’s Adult Literacy classes call 641-683-5181 or log onto the website at www.indianhills.edu
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
IHCC offers classes for adults who are interested in basic skill improvement including job-related and life coping skills, reading, writing, math and English. Students may register on their first day of class and study at an individualized pace with qualified instructors. The Comprehensive Adult student Assessment System (CASAS) is given to all students when they enroll into classes. Students may earn CASAS certificates documenting the learning process for adult students functioning academically below the General Education Development (GED) level.
English Language Learning (ELL)
ELL classes are designed to help adults, who are limited in English proficiency, achieve competence in the English Language. Oral communication for life situations is the foremost goal, followed by grammar, writing, reading, and listening. IHCC offers daytime and evening ELL classes in Ottumwa and Fairfield. Citizenship classes are available weekly in Ottumwa. Computer Literacy classes are taught by bilingual instructors and are offered weekly in Ottumwa.
General Education Development (GED)
Students who enroll in the GED program will prepare to take the following tests: Literature, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Upon successful completion of the GED test, adults are eligible to receive the Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the Iowa Department of Education. Students may register on their first day of class and study at an individualized pace with qualified instructors. GED classes are located at various sites within the counties Indian Hills serves. Educational resources, books, and study guides are available for students to use in the classroom. Indian Hills does offer GED testing in Ottumwa and a travel tester is available for those students who are unable to drive to the IHCC Testing Center.
I-Pathway GED Online Classes
I-Pathway online classes are a teacher supported on-line instructional tool. Just as in a traditional classroom, the teacher provides online support and instruction every step of the way. The student works through lessons and tests at his or her own pace. The I-Pathway program provides instant scoring of most student work. The teacher will grade assignments, give instructions, and provide feedback to the student. Students who enroll in this program can move through the GED very quickly.
Education to Career
Education to Career classes will help students transition to post secondary education or the workforce by bridging the gap between their educational and career goals. Classes are held daily on the Indian Hills Community College main campus. Students who enroll in this class will improve their math and writing skills, learn about campus resources, explore career and program opportunities available at IHCC, improve computer skills, and job seeking skills. National Career Readiness assessments are free for students enrolled in this program.
