Raising Readers Library Corners

What do you get when you mix kids, books, literacy activities and PBS characters together?

Family reading fun at the library!

IPTV and 47 libraries across Iowa have partnered together to host PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corners. These library corners give children and parents the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multimedia platforms.

Fun-filled activities from PBS KIDS Raising Readers television programs Sesame Street, WordWorld, Word Girl, Super Why!, Martha Speaks, and the Electric Company are guaranteed to get everyone excited about reading.

Children and families can visit the PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corners anytime during library hours to explore reading activities and games. Visitors to the library will find a colorful and inviting area featuring the PBS characters they love. Children can play games on a computer, read a book, or watch an educational and interactive literacy skill-building DVD.

The PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corners give children the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills through fun and engaging multimedia platforms ranging from self-directed worksheets, online reading games, online videos and librarian- or parent-led activities using media clips from a broad selection of the PBS KIDS shows.

All activities are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations and encompasses skills such as letter recognition, print awareness and vocabulary instruction.

IPTV is one of 20 PBS stations in the United States building partnerships and helping to test and develop models to provide caregivers, teachers and parents with access to engaging research-based, multiplatform content, activities and tools. This literacy 360 approach surrounds children with opportunities to read, and there's no place better to start than the public library!

One PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner is also available on loan from the State Library of Iowa.  If you would like to borrow one for use in your library, contact Rinda Kramme, of the SILO Interlibrary Loan system, at 1-800-248-4483.
