Iowa Valley Community College District’s Adult Education and Literacy program is dedicated to enriching the lives of people who are living in our communities.  We believe, as leaders and educators, it is our job to prepare adult students to analyze situations and communicate effectively so they are able to successfully live in our global society. 

Iowa Valley Community College District has Adult Education and Literacy programs located throughout our region.  We offer High School Equivalency Diploma instruction and final testing, English as a Second Language classes, and job enhancement and training programs for a variety of careers.  Our instructors understand the importance of gaining the skills necessary to earn a self-sustaining wage.   Class hours may vary depending on the site, but classes are located in the Marshalltown, Grinnell, Tama, and Iowa Falls communities. ...

Adult Education and Literacy Programs at Des Moines Area Community College

The HiSET® (High School Equivalency Test) is an assessment of skills and knowledge comparable to those of a high school graduate and has replaced the GED® in the state of Iowa as the assessment tool used to award the High School Equivalency Diploma.

The HiSET® test is a series of five tests covering writing, science, math, literature and the arts, and social studies. These tests require the test taker to apply reading, math, language, and critical thinking skills. Adult Learning Spotlight—Kirkwood Community College

Kirkwood Community College offers Adult Education and Literacy programming to students in the Kirkwood Service Area.  No student in the Kirkwood Service area is more than thirty minutes away from Adult Education opportunities. 

HiSET® Classes

Beginning January 2, 2014, Iowa will begin to offer the HiSET® assessment for high school equivalency, replacing the GED® as the test-based option to earn a high-school diploma.  All students who have not completed and passed the GED® by December 13, 2013 will be required to start over with the HiSET® assessment.  Kirkwood Community College offers HiSET® preparation at each of its learning centers.  Interested students will need to attend an orientation session, at which time an instructor will work with the student to determine an individualized plan for earning an Iowa High School Equivalency...
