From Tape to Digital
  • A Single Framework for Multiple Media Distribution

  • Presented by
  • Bob Long, CTO – Avid Broadcasting
  • (bob_long@avid.com)
2
The Problems
  • Your Assets – How do you store and use them?
  • How do you repurpose them?
  • How do you maintain the system that does all of this?
3
From Tape to Digital
  • Tape is cost effective for acquisition and storage, but locks the assets in
    • Hard to share
    • Hard to repurpose
  • But tape can burden the production process with extra steps

  • There is a better workflow…
4
Metadata Flow
  • What is Meta-data?

5
Metadata Flow
  • Why is it important?

6
Metadata Flow
  • Traditional Broadcasting Operations rely very much on three key information-carrying devices:
    • Paper
    • Pencils
    • People

7
Metadata Flow
        • This is why Newsroom Computer Systems (NRCS) were created…

    • A computer system that allows many users to keep track of meta data: scripts, rundowns, assignments, etc.
    • It is a great tool for people in the newsroom to work in a collaborative way.
    • It changed the way news is done.
8
Metadata Flow
  • Why hasn’t the workflow changed?

9
Metadata Flow
10
Metadata Flow
  • The process (as complex as it may be) works!
  • People are reluctant to change what’s not broken.

11
Metadata Flow
  • What’s the Problem?
    • Things change
    • Relying on Paper as an accurate “SnapShot” of the newscast
    • Linear process dependency

12
Metadata Flow
  • You need the ability to start being productive earlier in the process.
    • When a journalist creates a story in the rundown of the NRCS.. editors can get access to an electronic copy to start being productive!

13
Metadata Flow
      • When the story is complete and sent to the playout device the producer of the show is notified in the NRCS.
      • This allows the producer the option of viewing the story for possible errors before it goes on air.

14
Metadata Flow
  • Shared Storage Workgroups:
    • Large amounts of media and associated meta data to keep up with!
15
Metadata Flow

16
Metadata Flow
  • So, why is it important?

17
What Broadcasters Need
  • Products that work together
    • Within a product line
    • Across multiple vendors
  • Obsolescence protection for media assets
  • The ability to make changes anywhere in the process
  • The ability to sanely manage assets

  • Nonlinear Digital Workflow
18
What’s the Payoff?
  • More time to be creative
  • Increased productivity
  • Focus on content not technology
  • Higher quality product in the time allowed
  • Competitive edge
  • Digital assets with a long shelf life

19
Why Is This Hard to Do Right?
  • The problem is very complex
  • It’s like trying to get the entire world to speak a common language
  • There are no off-the-shelf solutions
  • Requires collective self discipline
  • Must take into account diverse requirements
20
A Structured Approach to Nonlinear Workflow
21
Layer 1: The Best Workflow Starts with Shared Storage
  • Real-time Performance
  • Supports any client application
22
Structured Approach to Nonlinear Workflow
23
Layer 2: Multiple Media Types
  • Support for industry-standard media
    • DV25
    • DV50
    • MPEG

24
Structured Approach to Nonlinear Workflow
25
Layer 3: Standardization
  • All Avid products are going to move to MXF as their native media file format

26
Structured Approach to Nonlinear Workflow
27

MetaSync Opens the Layer  4 Door
  • Opens Avid timeline to be able to edit any kind of Metadata
  • Uses AAF/XML to get data in and out
  • Directly supports interactive television
  • Multiple third-party vendors working       on products

29
Bring Media to Every Desktop
  • MediaSelect: play Avid media in a standard web browser directly from Unity
    • First LAN-based production media viewing system
    • No transcoding or redigitizing to proxy resolution
  • Extends NLW to collaborators out of the edit suite
    • All clients are now first-class citizens
    •   of the workgroup
30
Layer 5  APIs and Access Initiatives from Avid
  • XSI-SDK 3-D Plug-In Toolkit
  • TM-DHM Transfer Manager DHM API
  • TM-DET Transfer Manager DET API
  • TM-AUT Transfer Manager Automation
  • MM-QAPI MediaManager Query API
  • PAPI Pluto API (PAPI)
  • NRCS-COM iNEWS Com Control
  • NRCS-MOS General MOS agreement
  • MB-ActiveX MediaBrowse Active X
  • CA-DM ControlAir Device Manager
  • Metasync Metadata Import/Export
  • AVX Video Processing Plug-Ins
  • TDM Audio Processing Plug-Ins
  • DAE Digidesign Audio Engine
31
What can you do with your assets
  • If you use industry standard essence
  • In a standard wrapper
  • With rich metadata
  • Accessible through open API’s

  • You can begin to tackle multiple output channels: Convergence Newscasting!

Applications will employ their own data-structures
42
NewsML & The Content Data
  • Stories created in Vendor Partner Applications will employ their own Content Data Structures to match their needs.
    • Stories become part of the NewsML Record
    • Contain only pointers to non-textual assets
  • Framework APIs require
    • A text only version we call the “story essence”
      • Supports indexing
    • A bitmap and URL to non-textual assets
      • Supports discovery and reuse
43
Open to 3rd Party Application Development
  • Avid Broadcast is building several applications for the convergence framework
    • Television Broadcast
      • Scripting, Lineup, Automation
    • Active Web Content
    • Wireless
  • Others are being recruited to build…
    • Radio
    • Web
    • Wireless
    • Etc…
44
Why NewsML
  • Because it is an IPTC approved, open standard
  • It was built by the Media Channels it will be used by
  • Because it defines a rich environment
  • Because it levels the playing field with participating Framework Development Partners
  • Developing a new data-structure would further fragment the industry

48
How Do You Manage It All
  • You can’t
  • The system needs to come together intuitively & seamlessly
  • Data needs to flow naturally
  • All of the links, processes & workflows need to survive upgrades, expansion & downtime
49
What are the options
  • Low Overhead methods
    • One Vendor - One Solution
    • Many Vendors – Stable Standards
  • High Overhead methods
    • Many Vendors – Many Standards
    • Off the shelf components – Lots of effort

50
And if you do it right…

Thank You
