As chairman of the Project for Open Source Media, Tim Halle has spent the last few years working on a transport and content agnostic set top box, the Open Media Platform, scheduled for beta release in late October. Today, Tim's talk will focus on the implications of such platforms which are steadily growing in deployment and what he has learned in his adventures in the world of open source. Topics covered may include:
  • The Open Media Platform: Why this is a good idea, how it works.
  • Broadcatching and Podcasting: Fun with RSS and bit torrent and why you should care.
  • The emergence of citizen journalism: The REAL public television ?
  • Ten Billion channels and nothing on: the importance of Social networks and collaborative filtering.
  • Walled Garden or Gulag ? Why the cable common carrier decision is bad for everyone.
  • Escape from Stalag Comcast: Tune out, turn off, log in.
  • Interactive television: Back from the grave and ready to party ?
  • Are there business models and do we care ?
  • The Final battle: How this all plays out and why you win.
