|Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis)
|Definition :||Bt is a naturally-occurring bacterium found in soil worldwide. It produces crystal-like proteins that kill certain insects. These crystal proteins (Cry proteins) must be eaten to kill the insect.|
Bt is used by organic farmers, who apply it directly to their fields. |
Bt has been used for over 30 years to control the European corn borer and other insects.
Many people believe that insects, like the European corn borer, eventually will become resistant to Bt.
