Definition :A flat or hilly land that contains grasses and plants with deep roots, and few trees.
  
Facts: Historically, the area west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains was prairie. During the Westward Expansion of the United States, farmers moved into the prairie, breaking it up for farms.
