Arrowhead is a plant of the shallow wetlands that gets its name from its large, spearhead-shaped leaves that emerge above the water. Smaller leaves of the same plant, shaped like long and narrow ribbons, remain submerged in the water. These thin, little leaves are very flexible and can withstand the constant movement of the water. Another common name for this plant is swamp potato, which refers to the potato-sized tubers that grow on the roots. Muskrats and some ducks, particularly canvasbacks, feed on the tubers.
