Unlike its cousin, the red fox (who prefers open country), the gray fox is a secretive animal of the forest. There are very few gray foxes in the Loess Hills, but not because they are an endangered species. Rather, they generally prefer to live where woodlands are larger and more abundant. The gray fox eats about anything it can capture, such as rabbits, mice, and birds. It also eats many kinds of fruit. A hollow log or burrow is used for a den when the gray fox is raising pups. The gray fox is the only member of the dog family that can climb up the branches of a tree to escape enemies.
