A nut is a hard, dry fruit containing a seed of a tree, and an acorn is the type of nut produced by oak trees. Nearly every natural forest in Iowa contains at least one or two species of oak, and their acorns are extremely important. These acorns grow into baby oaks and maintain the oak forest. They are also a source of food for nearly 100 different animals, such as wood ducks, grouse, turkeys, quails, blue jays, raccoons, squirrels, and deer.
