From the human perspective, poison ivy is one of their least favorite plants found in the forest. However, from the animal perspective, if fulfills a vital role. Over 60 animal species are known to use poison ivy as food, and for 30 of them it makes up a significant part of their diet. Most of these animals are songbirds that primarily consume the seeds inside the berries during the winter when other foods are scarce. Although, to humans, all parts of the plant are poisonous.
