Water lilies grow well in the shallow water of lake margins, ponds, or marshes. Their large, round leaves grow to be up to one foot in diameter and usually float on the top of the water. Occasionally, the leaves grow to be so numerous that they cover large areas of water and crowd out other plants. The flowers, seeds, and roots of the plants are eaten by ducks, muskrats, beaver, and deer.
