  Timeline Of Genetic Engineering

The history of genetics and genetic engineering is fascinating. This timeline provides just a few highlights of the many interesting and clever uses of genetic engineering. As you look through the past, notice how the understanding of genetics has changed. You should be able to identify three main waves of advancement in the field.

  • By-products of genes were used without knowing how genetics was involved in the process.
  • Genes were identified and research looked at what genes were and what they did, setting the stage for genetic engineering.
  • Researchers started to manipulate genes, beginning a new field of research we call genetic engineering.
