Buffer strips that are located along river areas can act as a filtration device. If water is coming across the landscape...by having those buffer strips, what it does is it can slow down the flow of water. It can actually have sediment settle out and that actually has a double benefit, in terms of the fact that some pollutants are attached to the sediment, so if you can filter those out before they actually reach the nearby streams, then it gives a chance for water to infiltrate into the ground. And you can sometimes have bacteria that can actually breakdown some of the pollutants that might be in the water.
