Find out why this farmer thinks factory farms are harming our water.

We need local control. The counties need to have...at the county level we need to have say. We need to have participation by the people from the small towns and the family farms and the small communities to have a say where these things are placed. Not every county's the same. I know they're saying you've got to have a standard thing. You can't have a standard thing because Marshall County is different than Hardin County. Hardin County is different than Polk. You understand what I'm getting at. You get big cities and small towns dispersed differently. You have got streams and things like this...you have got lakes. So there has to be some different standards, some different ideals for each county. The idea we could have one standard is stupid and it can't work. We have to have local control because that's people. I mean aren't the people of Iowa sick and tired of seeing manure float down the streams? Aren't they sick and tired of hearing about the fish kills all the time? Aren't they sick and tired...aren't they worried about the quality of the water system in this country and in this state? I mean the Raccoon River is in the watershed of the hog factories up north of there and I would think Des Moines residents would be very concerned about that. Same thing with the Iowa River. You know it's a big issue. We've got future generations to worry about. Don't we want water quality for them? air quality? land quality? Factory farms aren't going to provide that for us.
