Grenville Dodge's Spy Network

Grenville Dodge also became famous for setting up an intensive spy network during the Civil War. Dodge had over 100 agents behind enemy lines whose identities were known only to him. Freed black slaves were seldom stopped by Southern guards, so they were often employed as spies. Southern newspapers published information about Confederate troop movements, but they weren’t easy to get unless you crossed enemy lines.
