Hands on Banking for Young Adults
Subject Areas:
    Guidance/Personal Growth
    Mathematics

This session is for high school students.

Join Scott Johnson, president of Wells Fargo in Iowa, for a 50- minute session that will help your students Get Smart About Credit.

With today’s economic challenges, it’s more important than ever for teens and young adults to know about personal finances and managing credit. Teaching them how to best use credit will equip them to handle adult financial responsibilities, from using credit cards and applying for car loans to managing a mortgage. These facts underscore the need:

-Only 59 percent of the young adults in Generation Y (ages 18 to 29) pay their bills on time every month, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

- The Jump$tart Coalition reports that four in 10 high school seniors believe that credit cards and car loans have lower interest rates than mortgage loans.

-Only one in three parents have taught their teen how to balance a checkbook, and even fewer have explained how credit card interest and fees work (Jump$tart Coalition).

Johnson will be using Wells Fargo’s financial education program, called Hands on Banking. Hands on Banking is a noncommercial program that aligns with the Iowa Core and the 21st Century Skills.

Hands on Banking is free and is designed for both self-paced, individual learning and classroom use. Free instructors guides can help you (the teacher) prepare, extend or modify lessons and assess progress.

This program does and excellent job of offering the learner real-life examples and problems that are built into the interactive software. It makes learning about money fun! Each teacher who registers and attends this session will receive 3 copies of the DVD that accompanies the Hands on Banking curriculum. In addition there will be a drawing for cast iron banks donated by Wells Fargo Bank.
