This session is part of a series of ICNs that will help your students understand what it takes to become a vet as well as the various fields that students with an interest in animal science might pursue. There will be sessions with staff from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University that will help your students understand the variety of careers available in the field from research to biomedical science to becoming a veterinarian. Staff will also talk with students about what they should be doing now in school to prepare for the rigor of the programs at Iowa State.
In this session students interact with a large animal veterinarian.
This city girl 'met' her first cow when she was 14 years old. From that day on, her goal was to become a large animal veterinarian. After studying veterinary medicine for seven and a half years, in 1976 she was recruited to a small town practice in Iowa. This made her the first female veterinarian in the county!
She now owns the practice and lives on a farm with her family. This veterinarian treats farm animals, pets and some exotic animals. One day she treated 16 different species of animals!
In addition to her veterinary practice, she operates a laboratory business. She and a team of professionals perform caesarean sections on swine and raise the baby pigs in the lab until they're five to twelve weeks old. This process introduces new genetics into an existing herd.
This veterinarian says she loves working with farmers and the way of life she has chosen!
During the session, the career professional will share information about his/her career and show students a short feature videotape highlighting his/her career. The majority of the session is reserved for interaction between the students and the career professional. With this in mind, we request that each student bring 3-5 written questions to the ICN room. Students are expected to pose a question each time the facilitator calls on their site.
