Subject Areas:

|
This is a taped session that originally occurred summer 2012. Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) Executive Director, Tom Colvin, will join us for this session. Tom will share his love of reading and animals with your students as he slips in a couple of important messages during this session. He will also talk a bit about his job at the ARL and he'll bring his rescue dog Gurdy for the kids to see. Tom will read from the book Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays. This ever popular book is on many reading lists and tells the stories of eight unwanted strays that all went on to achieve great things. Mr. Colvin will bring his own shelter dog, Gertie, and will share her story with your students. Everyone wants to adopt a puppy or a kitten but during this session, we hope to enlighten your students about the plight of grown animals that fill our shelters. Often older dogs or cats will sit in a shelter for a year or more and sometimes they are never adopted. Mr. Colvin will talk about how they too make great companions and most importantly the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. We can stop the problem of unwanted pets by taking this first very important step!
