Are you teaching a unit on the environment or on conservation?

Join Anne Duncan, the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator from Wartburg College, as she shares ideas with your students on simple things they can do to make a difference and ultimately reduce their carbon footprint

In her presentation, Mrs. Duncan will share some amazing facts about supplies that are used by students each year. Did you know that every year 3.4 million tons of paper is purchased during the back-to-school season? It is hard to imagine what 3.4 million tons of paper even looks like! And, what about the 14 billion pencils that are purchased each year? We don’t want your students to stop using paper and pencils but there are really simple ideas on how to reduce the negative impact to trees!

In addition, we will work together in this interactive session to create a list of things each student can do at home to make their home more green. How about reducing water use and some energy savings ideas? Your students will leave with a list of things they can do to hang on their refrigerator as a reminder. We’ll also look at where our products come from and how they are packaged. (How about a metal water bottle instead of buying water in disposable water bottles?)

Before the session we will provide a way for teachers to reuse or repurpose some paper so students can create their lists. No purchase needed and a great teachable moment!

Mrs. Duncan will also briefly share information about her career and how and why she got into this field of science.
