About this series:
This three part series is designed to help Challenging Behavior Specialists (CBS) implement appropriate Functional Based Assessments (FBA) and to create effective and durable Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) for children who display challenging behaviors. Part three of this series includes seven ICN sessions designed to increase the CBS’s understanding and abilities to conduct the full gamut of technologies that not only help constitute an initial Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), but also ways to evaluate, modify, fade, and generalize that plan for maximum effect with the fewest negative side effects. This series is designed to increase understanding of what BIP components to use based off of the results of a well conducted FBA.
Part three of this series is intended to support CBS’s from each AEA who are involved in the training of assessment of children with challenging behaviors. These trainings coincide with the practical experiences they are receiving from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in FBA and the concepts discussed are designed to increase the technical assistance capabilities of each CBS. While the CBS’s are the target audience this series, anyone in the state that has attended the previous series are welcomed to attend. Thus, for all attendees in Part 3 of this series, a basic understanding of FBA technology and how it is appropriately used to assist with the development of effective and durable BIPs is required to receive maximum benefit from this series. Part three will specifically focus on providing attendees the following: a) understanding the usefulness of experimental designs for evaluating FBA and BIP data, b) how to match the treatment components generated for BIPs to the function of challenging behavior(s) identified from conclusive FBA data, c) how to conduct additional augmentative assessments to improve the potency of BIPs, and d) how to program for generalization and fading of a BIP. Each session in the series builds upon the previous series of Basic Behavioral Principles and Function Based Assessments and details how to develop successful and durable Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). The overall theme across these sessions is the development of concrete knowledge that permits for fluent application of appropriate FBA technologies that will result in the selection of appropriate, effective, and durable BIP’s designed to reduce challenging behaviors and to increase appropriate/adaptive behaviors displayed by children with such concerns.
Maximum benefit for attendees will be gleaned by attending all sessions in the series, however CBS’s should select from those sessions that most meet their needs. In addition, up to 2 additional readings is assigned to each session as a means to augment the attendees learning. It is strongly recommended that attendees read these articles before attending sessions, as much of the content in the session will be gleaned from these readings.
Any remaining time during sessions will be allocated for question and answers periods regarding the topics and for networking and information sharing between AEA staff and participants.
All efforts will be made to keep topics on the dates listed. Changes may be made based on presenter availability or the emergence of unplanned issues (e.g., weather).

Using Experimental Design to Evaluate BIPs and FBA Data
The initial session of Part Three of this Series will focus on the usefulness of experimental designs to demonstrate the effects or non-effects of a BIP on challenging behavior. The three main experimental designs and their appropriate use will be discussed.

Using Experimental Designs to Evaluate Data and Matching Treatment to Function: BIPs designed for Attention Functions
The session will continue the discussion from Session 1 and focus on treatment selection for BIPs based on FBA data that indicates an attention function for challenging behavior. The benefits and disadvantages of common positive reinforcement function-based treatment options will be discussed.
April 3, 2013 -- NOW April 17
Matching Treatment to Function: BIPs designed for Positive Reinforcement Functions
The session will continue to focus on treatment selection for BIPs based on FBA data that indicates an attention function for challenging behavior, however it will continue for data that indicates a tangible function as well. The benefits and disadvantages of common positive reinforcement function-based treatment options will also be discussed.
April 17, 2013 -- NOW May 1
Matching Treatment to Function: BIPs designed for Negative Reinforcement Functions
The session will focus on treatment selection for BIPs based on FBA data that indicates an escape function for challenging behavior. The benefits and disadvantages of common escape reinforcement function-based treatment options will be discussed.
May 1, 2013 -- NOW May 15
Matching Treatment to Function: BIPs designed for Automatic Reinforcement Functions and Default Procedures
The session will focus on treatment selection for BIPs based on FBA data that indicates an automatic function for challenging behavior. Function-based BIPs will be compared to Default procedures without FBA data. The benefits and disadvantages of common escape reinforcement function-based treatment options will be discussed.
May 15, 2013 -- NOW May 22
Programming for Generalization and Fading and Advanced Assessments
This session will focus on the overall goals of when and how to a fade a BIP so that the child is responding to the natural cues within the classroom environment and how to tailor a BIP to achieve such outcomes. If time permits this session will cover advanced assessments designed to improve the effectiveness of a BIP by individually assessing specific variables designed to help tailor treatment individually treatment effective components for maximum effectiveness.

FBA Procedures Manual Review: Make-up Date
This session is dedicated to the review of a procedures manual designed based on the utilization of all of the technologies covered within this series. The manual will be covered in its entirety. This session would also serve as a make-up session should any of the other sessions were unable to be held (e.g., weather).
