K-12 Connections Event
Taking Flight: Airplanes and Rockets
Subject Areas:
    Science
    Technology

Science takes flight on the ICN! Join "Gizmo Glenn," educator from the Bettendorf Family Museum, to learn about the science of flight. We'll learn how flight is used by plants and animals for survival. And we'll investigate man's fascination with flight throughout history as well as our attempts to accomplish flight. Glenn also highlights the differences between rocket and airplane flight.

The students have the opportunity to put what they've learned to the test as they construct a simple glider plane and rocket in the ICN rooms.

Adults registering for this event agree to provide each student with the following materials:

  • One roll of clear tape for every 2-3 students
  • One pair of scissors for every 2 students
  • One non-bending drinking straw
  • One ruler for every 2-3 students
  • Two extra blank sheets of paper per child
  • One copy of each of the two templates per child (download and print 'Taking Flight' templates Classroom Resources)

Important Dates:
November: Aviation History Month
January 9: Aviation in America Anniversary
December 17: Wright Brothers' Day

Following the ICN session, registrants receive the book Let's Fly, Wilbur and Orville or alternate title.
