Subject Areas:
    Language Arts/Communication
    Social Studies

Summer Stories & More ICN sessions are correlated with the national summer reading program. The theme for 2013 is Dig Into Reading. Sessions consist of a story read aloud, a professional guest presenter, and an activity. Each week is a new topic and several opportunities to participate.

Under the Earth

James Quinn, local Geologist and Lapidarist will join us this week for a discussion on rocks in Iowa and the story that each tells. We'll be reading the story Rocks And Minerals, then discussing and showing examples of each of 3 different types of rocks. He will also show some of examples of jewelry he's created from rocks in Iowa, as well as fossils from around our state.

Materials needed this week: a paper clip, a slice of each white, wheat, and rye bread for each kid or pair of kids. They'll squish the bread together to show how layers of sediment are squeezed together to form sedimentary rocks. The paper clip will show how a fossil leaves an imprint.

Confirmed registrants receive the free book True or False: Rocks & Minerals.
