Guides and Goals

Prairie Connections is a synthesized learning experience composed of classroom activities and projects, a live interactive video experience, with an emphasis on forming partnerships across the state.

A Teachers’ Guide contains pre- and post- (field trip) activities for three different grade levels (5-6, 7-8, 9-12), each related to specified national content standards in science and geography. Each section contains extension activities and model project descriptions. Teachers and students can refer to extensive bibliographical and resource listings to enhance the learning outcomes. Teachers participating in the interactive field trips will receive copies of the Teachers’ Guide. Further copies are available to Iowa educators on request. (jenny@iptv.org)

Goals, Objectives and Strategies

The goal of Prairie Connections is to provide a variety of learning environments through which students develop an understanding and appreciation for Iowa’s tallgrass prairies and how human activity has brought about change. After participating in a field trip and completing classroom projects, students should be able to:

  • 5-6th grades: understand what Iowa landscape looked like when the first settlers arrived
  • 7-8th grades: analyze how wildlife populations have been affected by human intervention
  • 9-12th grades: investigate and become involved in prairie conservation or reconstruction programs.

Teacher Inservice Opportunity

On September 15, 1998, from 4:00- 5:00 p.m., teachers are invited to attend an ICN inservice. This is an opportunity to review the materials and procedures, and to ask any questions. Please indicate on the sign-up form if you can attend.
