How to Forgive

posted on January 26, 2008 at 5:11 PM

Mary Hayes Grieco is the Director and lead trainer for the Midwest Institute for Forgiveness Training, and author of "Be A Light" and "The Peaceful Heart: A practical guide to Unconditional Love and Forgiveness."

Mary serves on staff at Hazelden Renewal Center, and is in private practice as a counselor at The Well Healing Arts Center in Minneapolis. Mary and her trainers at the Institute teach a step-by-step method of forgiveness that she says "always works!" to bring people the inner peace they need when dealing with a conflict. Journalist Nancy Heather met with her in Waukee, Iowa.

It seems like conflict is a perennial theme in the human story, playing out on a large scale as terrorism and war, and on a smaller scale in daily life as road rage, law suits, and spats with your spouse. This special episode of the Iowa Journal takes a look at the emotional challenge that ordinary people face when dealing with the upsetting circumstance of being in a conflict. Whether the conflict is with someone you dearly love or someone you barely know, the need to forgive another person arises from time to time. But how does one forgive? Let's hear how one expert, Mary Hayes Grieco, helps people forgive and move on with life.
