Workers moving decorative stone pieces in place during restoration of the state capitol. In 1983 a major restoration project began on the exterior and interior of the state capitol in Des Moines. The project took about 18 years to complete. The gold dome was rebuilt and much of the decorative stonework was restored. The windows were replaced and the interior was repainted.
