Iowa Public Television
The Germans were the largest foreign-born group to come to Iowa. Many came from the Province of Schleswig-Holstein. Poverty was everywhere. Taxes were high and people looked for a way out. In the 1850s America became the way out for a million Germans. Dorothy Logies father came to America with his family in the 1850s. They settled in the Davenport area where the German immigrate population was very large.
