Aluminum Bridge, 1958

The first and only aluminum highway overpass was opened in Urbandale over Interstate 35/80. In the late 1950s the Iowa Highway Commission experimented with use of aluminum as an alternative to steel. Aluminum was abandoned after steel again became more available in the 1960s. 1958.
