Chapter 15: Business and Industry in Iowa

Introduction

Iowans manufacture (make) many different products, including tractors, washing machines, and ballpoint pens. The companies that make products like these are called industries, and the buildings where they are made are called factories. The first products manufactured in our state were made within the home in the 1800s. Factories appeared later. Through the years, Iowa industries have been related to agriculture, using the corn, oats, beef, and pork raised on Iowa farms. Most Iowa industries have been located in the eastern part of the state, which has the largest cities to provide the work force. Iowa products are sold all over the world.
