Challenge: At This Moment


Learning Goals:

Students will:

  • Choose a topic for research related to a specific "moment of significance" in Iowa.
  • Write a research question related to the moment of significance.
  • Research the people, places and events of the time surrounding the moment of significance.
  • Use primary and secondary sources related to the people, places and events of the time surrounding the moment of significance.
  • Analyze the information uncovered during the research.
  • Hypothesize about how history may have turned out differently if decisions made during the moment of significance had been different.
  • Evaluate decisions made during the moment of significance.
  • Publish information about the moment of significance as it relates to the research question posed by the student.
  • Reflect on learnings after completing the "At This Moment" Challenge.

"At This Moment " addresses the following Standards in Historical Thinking:

Standard 3: The student engages in historical analysis and interpretation.
Therefore, the student is able to:

  • Analyze cause-and-effect relationships and multiple causation, including the importance of the individual, the influence of ideas, and the role of chance.
  • Hypothesize the influence of the past.


Standard 4: The student conducts historical research.
Therefore, the student is able to:

  • Formulate historical questions.
  • Obtain historical data from a variety of sources.
  • Interrogate historical data.
  • Identify the gaps in the available records and marshal contextual knowledge and perspectives of the time and place.
  • Employ quantitative analysis.
  • Support interpretations with historical evidence


Standard 5: The student engages in historical issues-analysis and decision-making.
Therefore, the student is able to:

  • Marshal evidence of antecedent circumstances and contemporary factors contributing to problems and alternative courses of action.
  • Evaluate alternative courses of action.
