America Under Attack on 9/11

Members of a terrorist group, Al Qaeda, crashed two planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Over 3,000 people died in the attack.

War in Iraq

U.S. forces attacked Iraq. Dictator Saddam Hussein was captured. Fighting continued between rival factions within the country. American troops remained in Iraq and were targets of insurgents.

Columbia Shuttle Crashes

The Columbia space shuttle crashes, killing all seven astronauts aboard.

World Event

Tsunami Hits Indonesia

On December 24 an underwater earthquake caused several tsumanis to make landfall. The disaster caused over 220,000 deaths.

Woman Make Up Majority

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reported for the first time that women made up the majority of medical school applicants in the United States.

Basketball at Wells Fargo Arena

For the first time, the state high school basketball tournaments were not held at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. The events moved to a new facility--Wells Fargo Arena.

Wrestling at Wells Fargo Arena

From 1970-2005 there was only one year when the state high school wrestling tournaments were not held at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium. In 2006, the state tournament was moved to the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
