Rep. Tom Latham (R-Clive) says he had a conversation with his wife and family and decided it is the right time for him to step aside and give up his seat in Congress. He says it's an emotional decision because he loves the job, and he has considered it a great honor.

Donna Mueller, CEO of the Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS), says Iowa was ahead of the ball on reforms to the pension system. Changes went into effect a couple years ago, and public employees are now contributing more and sharing in the risk.

State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald says IPERS is a good program, and it's worked relatively well for decades. However, he says it would be good public policy to cap benefits at a reasonable amount to prevent high salary earners from collecting six-figure annual pensions.
