They’re used to relax, socialize, and celebrate, and although they’re legal, use of these substances can have serious negative consequences. More people are addicted to nicotine and alcohol than to any other drugs of abuse. In purely economic terms, alcohol-related problems cost society approximately $185 billion per year according to a government report. In addition, two million adults are estimated to meet the criteria for pathological gambling and another 4-6 million can be considered problem gamblers. This episode of The Iowa Journal examines legal addictions with host Jeneane Beck. Guests for the program are Arthur Schut, president and CEO of the Mid-Eastern Council on Chemical Abuse; and Mark VanderLinden, M.S.W., coordinator of the Iowa Gambling Treatment Program at the Iowa Department of Public Health. The episode also includes a visit to the University of Iowa to look at the school’s alcohol prevention efforts.
