The
9th Annual Lakeside DixieFest
Since
its inception in 1993, the Lakeside DixieFest has entertained
guests from 35 states and several foreign countries with
some of the finest Dixieland jazz available...and the year
2001 will be no exception.
The
9th Annual Lakeside DixieFest being held on Saturday, July
28th, and Sunday, July 29th, 2001, will feature six traditional
jazz groups. New to the festival will be the "Moldy Figs"
from Minneapolis. The "New Red Onion Jazz Babies", a nationally
regarded band from Kansas City will be returning for its
second appearance, and the "Maple Street Jazz Band" from
Des Moines will round-out the visiting bands providing week-end
performances in Clear Lake, Iowa's recently refurbished
City Park Band Shell.
In
addition to Clear Lake's own "Spats'n Flapper Speakeasy
Orchestra", the popular host band, the "Raiders of the Lost
Art" from Mason City, will also be performing.
The
annual Lakeside DixieCruises on-board the "Lady of the Lake",
a 150-passenger double-deck stern-wheeler have become an
enjoyable tradition for many festival-goers, and this year
will feature the live Dixieland renditions of "Les Fields
and the Turkey River All-Stars" from Rochester, Minnesota,
While
there is a $10.00 per person charge for Saturday evening's
DixieCruises, all on-shore concerts in City Park on Saturday
night and Sunday, will continue to be free-to-the-public,
thanks to the generous support of area businesses and
organizations, along with contributions from attending
"patrons".
Performing
Groups:
The
"New Red Onion Jazz Babies" first appeared
at the Lakeside DixieFest in 1997, and are back by popular
demand. During the groups many years of performing at
festivals across the country, it has established itself
as a truly premier traditional jazz band.
The
"Moldy Figs" has been one of the top
bands in the Minneapolis area for many years. While this
is the band's first performance at the Lakeside DixieFest,
it has appeared in the area at the MacNider Arts Festival
in Mason City, Iowa, and the Doc Evans Jazz Festival in
Albert Lea, Minnesota, and is a regular at the Minnesota
Orchestra's Sommerfest Series.
The
"Maple Street Jazz Band" will be making
its third appearance at the festival, having last performed
here in 1998. In addition to a busy schedule in the Des
Moines area, it has been a regular for many years at the
Bix Beiderbecke Jazz festival, as well as IPTV's "Bix
Lives" series.
"Les
Fields and the Turkey River All-Stars" will be
entertaining guests on both DixieCruises on Saturday evening.
This group was one of three bands that performed at the
first Lakeside DixieFest in 1993, and this will make the
fourth appearance for this highly entertaining band.
The
"Spats'n Flapper Speakeasy Orchestra",
an authentic Roaring Twenties hot society orchestra, made
its debut performance during the 1997 DixieFest. Since
that time, the group has made numerous area appearances,
and accepted two invitations to perform as part of the
Minnesota Orchestra's Sommerfest series at Orchestra Hall
in Minneapolis.
