learning triangleLearning Triangle

The Learning Triangle is used to teach children skills and concepts using PBS KIDS programs, books, and activities.

Engage children in theme-related activities in any order and at any time. Use the Learning Triangle to point out the connections between what they VIEW, the book they READ, and the activity they DO. The repetition and variety of media used will reinforce the concepts and skills with children. As they explore a theme, children begin to construct their own understanding of it and learn in a deeper and more personal way.

Use the Learning Triangle in four easy steps:

1. Start with a theme . What are the children interested in? Dinosaurs. Fairy tales. Puppies. Rocket ships. What do you want to teach them? Self-esteem. Cooperation. Love of nature. How to prepare for school?
2. Then view a segment of a program featuring the theme. Use it as an opportunity to ask questions, discuss issues, relate the theme to your children's interest or concerns.
3. Then build on their questions and concerns by reading one or more books relating to the theme.
4. Finally, make sure they really get it by giving them some hands-on learning experiences. Connect the viewing and reading to related activities .

Each month in the downloads section of this Web site, IPTV features a Learning Triangle Activity Sheet on two different themes. Each activity sheet includes a list of programs airing on IPTV during the month, related books, and activities (games, play ideas and crafts) related to the theme.
