Betsy Snow Hickok
"I wrote this poem in a brief window of time following
the event--just two days later--when I was still numb enough to be
able to put words on paper. I never start a poem with a clear idea
of where it will go, but I remember feeling a desire to tranform the
images from that day for the sake of the victims. I was thinking that
if I had been among them, I would want people to remember me in life
and not in the brief moment of my death.
"After this poem, I wasn't able to write for a month. The
event felt too huge to write about, and other topics seemed too
small. I think a lot of writers may have felt this way." -
Betsy Snow Hickok

Rebecca Poen
"How Will I Get Home" was written by Rebecca Poen, art
instructor at Stanton Community School. Poen wrote the song the
day after the attacks, shared it with her 7th grade students and
then invited them to sing it with her. Poen says she felt their
voices were so clear and beautiful and that was what the song needed
to demonstrate the hopefulness of youth.
The students have been heavily involved with the production of
a compact disc recording of their performance, from their work in
the studio to the design of the covers, labels, and flyers, in addition
to promotion of the song.
The students have two goals for the song. One is to send copies
to the people affected in New York and Washington, D.C. The other
is to raise money to send to New York City. Those interested in
donating to the students' cause may contact Stanton Community School
by mail at 605 Elliott, Stanton, IA 51573, by phone at (712) 829-2162,
or by email: bpoen@aea14.k12.ia.us.

Beyond 9-11
Iowa artists respond to the events of September 11, 2001
Twenty-one Iowa artists, writers, and musicians offer creative
works that express their responses to the September terrorism or
its aftermath. The selected artists also speak about their background,
their creative work, and their reactions to 9-11.
This project encouraged new, alternative images, words, and sounds—art
that moves beyond the events, goes deeper than popular reaction,
offers a different viewpoint, or symbolizes renewal and hope.
