The Shows (Feature 1118.74)
UNI Jazz Revolution

50 years ago, a group of Iowa State Teachers' College music students started a revolution. Their clandestine jazz band was one of the first college bands of its kind and its influence started a trend that led to the incorporation of jazz in college programs at UNI, South Dakota State University and many other colleges and universities around the country. 10 of the original 20 musicians were back on campus in February of 2001.

Part concert, reunion and 50th anniversary of the jazz program, the musicians played standard and student-arranged numbers for an audience of 1100 at UNI's Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The musicians shared with us what it was like to be a rebel in the 50's, what impact their college experience had on their lives and careers and the value of a musical education.
