Iowa Cancer Update

When you look around, there are very few people whose lives have never been touched by cancer. Just about everyone knows someone who's fought the dread disease, and many of us know people who've lost the battle. As the second-largest killer in Iowa, cancer is a disease that has many Iowans playing "detective". Around the state, Iowans are participating in more than 250 clinical research studies, and there are at least that many laboratory studies also in the works. Living in Iowa will focus in on a group in Iowa City that recently qualified as a National Cancer Institute designated cancer center. Affiliated with the University of Iowa, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is responsible for hundreds of studies, and is operating under a "matrix" approach that encourages specialists in many fields to share their knowledge of the human body, of cancer, of the immune system, and all related systems. One of the studies, monoclonal therapy, has been tried around the world on more than 120-thousand lymphoma patients, and we'll meet an Iowan who was among the first to try this immuno-booster therapy.
