The Shows (Feature 1222.247)
From Iowa, with Love

Like most of the nation, Betty Nielsen of Varina, Iowa couldn't get the horrifying images of September 11, 2001 out of her head. She felt compelled to do something about her grief, and even though she wasn't a quilter, Betty decided to make quilts for each family of the 9/11 victims. What started out as a generous goal has become even bigger as families ask for not one, but sometimes 2 or 3 quilts at a time. Betty and her friend Pat Archer started Freedom Quilts in November of 2001 and have gotten many community members to jump on the quilting bandwagon. In fact, people from the community gather 2 to 3 times weekly to make quilts, and even more remarkable people from all over Iowa and the U.S. are sending quilts for the project. "Living in Iowa" visits with Betty and her husband Dennis, and the many other people involved with Freedom Quilts and learns how Iowa has opened its heart to the victims of 9/11.
