Diversity Gardens

Two years ago, community leaders of Storm Lake created a project called the Diversity Gardens to provide the Hispanic population of the town with the opportunity to have their own garden plots. The program was also developed to determine the feasibility of growing specific crops and the marketability of the produce as alternative crops in Northwest Iowa. The Diversity Gardens have been yet another way Storm Lake has dealt with its growing diversity. Ever since the influx of immigrants, the town has been proactive in helping the newcomers acclimate to their new surroundings, as well as help members of the community cope with the changes in their town. Living in Iowa visits with Hector Velez, a community liaison for IBP and coordinator for the Diversity Gardens; Eldon Everhart, ISU Extension Specialist and Raimundo Villareal and his family, one of the many diverse families participating in the project.
