The Shows (Feature 1214.195)
Big Shoulders

During World War I, Fort Des Moines was transformed into the first training camp for black officers. Among the men assembled there was William Morris' grandfather. In his contribution to the recently published book "Outside In: African-American History in Iowa," Morris tells the story of the camp and its far reaching effects on such acclaimed military figures as Colin Powell.

William Morris will also join Morgan in the studio to talk about the book and about progress on The Fort Des Moines Memorial Park and Education Center, a monument to both the black WWI officers and the WACs who trained there during World War Two.
