A Bid For The General

During World War I, General Jack Pershing raised over $40,000 for the American Red Cross - a considerable achievement for anyone, but considering that General Jack Pershing was actually a rooster, that's something to crow about. Born in Fontanelle, Iowa, General Jack Pershing was auctioned off by D.R. Jones of Casey, Iowa, not once, but over and over again to raise money for the American Red Cross. By the time the war ended, Jack had traveled nearly 8,000 miles and had been sold more than 9,000 times. At his death Jack was taken to a taxidermist and his remains were donated to the State Historical Society's museum, where they remained for eighty years. Recently however he has flown the coop, to again raise money for the Red Cross.
