Squirrel Cage Jail
(Side Roads)
Broadcast 06/06/02
In operation from 1885 to 1969, the Pottawattamie county jail was an experiment in rotary incarceration. Nicknamed the squirrel cage jail, it has a three-tiered cylinder with each level cut into 10 pie-shaped cells. One guard could look in on each cell by turning a large crank and rotating the cylinder. It's now a museum operated by the Pottawattamie County Historical Society and open on weekends only in May and September. During June through August the museum is open on weekdays. For group tours or more information call (712)323-2509.
